What is moissanite?
Originally discovered over 120 years ago in a meteorite, today—because of its rarity—moissanite is lab-grown with minimal environmental impact. Moissanite’s benefits of durability and refraction make it the perfect choice as an affordable option to a diamond...
Many upscale jewelers and designers are designing beautiful pieces in moissanite with prices ranging up into the thousands of dollars.
Moissanite Characteristics
- Brilliance and fire: Moissanite has a higher brilliance and "fire" (colored flashes) than diamond, which can give it a rainbow sparkle that is more pronounced, especially in larger stones.
- Hardness: With a Mohs hardness of 9.25, (genuine diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale) moissanite is extremely durable and resistant to scratches, making it suitable for everyday wear.
- Color: Lab-created moissanite is typically colorless or near-colorless, though natural moissanite can be found in shades of green, yellow, and gray.
- Clarity: Lab-created moissanite can be made to be internally flawless, whereas natural diamonds often have inclusions.
- Origin: Natural moissanite is extremely rare and was first discovered in a meteorite. Today's moissanite is created in a lab from silicon carbide.
- Affordability: Moissanite is significantly more affordable than a natural diamond, with some sources stating it costs a fraction of a diamond's price.
- Testing: Because it shares some characteristics with diamond, moissanite can pass traditional diamond tests, like those for thermal conductivity.
